Rage Quit

Spencer is actually pretty good at Hearthstone.  I drew 2 comics today, but I’m only posting this one.  The other one involved roommate drama & eating toilet paper.

I bought a new sketch book a few weeks ago along with a brush pen.  What resulted was this doodle of Finn the human with a huge pencil.

2D Design final project- Process

I love when other artists show their process.  So here is one I made---just for you!

Step one: The Idea!
Next week is the last week of Winter Semester here at BYU.  After this semester I am staying for Spring and Summer semester.  For those you one who read My Skinny Jeans are Red, you're probably familiar with my roommate Ken.  Ken isn't stay at BYU, he is leaving on his own adventure back home in Wyoming.  The guy that lives next door to us, Justin, is a good friend of ours.  Justin is leaving on his mission soon to Brazil.  So basically life is never going to be the same for the three of us.  We are all going our own way.  So I wanted to create a piece of art that cements this idea.

So I decided to make a large stencil with the three of us that shows where we are now and where we are going.

Step two: Photo references
I took pictures of all of us and then photoshoped us in the arrangement and composition that I wanted.
Step three: stencil base
I then took the photo into Painter 3 and painted over it and made a stencil.

Justin's face took forever to do!

Step four: Printing

After designing the stencil I scaled it to 19'' to 19'' and pulled it into Word and printed out the image.

Step five: Trace and transfer
After I printed out the stencil's base I traced it onto tracing paper and then rubbed it on to the final paper.

Step six: Cutting
Then I stayed up till 5am and cut this bad boy out!

Step seven: newspaper
I wanted a part of our room to be included in this piece of art.  In the beginning of the semester Ken, Justin, Alton and I all helped make the newspaper couch that is in our room.  Originally it was going to be three times as large, but after making a third of it we never found time to build the rest.

So I took a chuck of the couch out.

And made a college using articles and headlines that related to us or described us.

Step eight: Final touches
The final step was to glue the two parts together and then mount it onto black form core.

There is a lot of hidden symbolism in this peice and it took over 20 hours to create.  I am really proud of this.  Hopefully my professor likes it.  Let me know what you think in the comments below.

me as madman

This is a work in progress!  It is me as Mike Allred's superhero Madman!
I'm not as fit as Madman, but that is what I would look like in the suit.  Let me know what you guys think in the comments below!  And part 4 of the tattoo ken arch will be posted just as soon as I draw it!

eating it

Here is a video for you guys for the weekend.  Last year my brother Matthew, our friend Berk and I found this old mountain biking trail by our house.  The video cuts short, but I actually fell down the hill and landed in the stream with my bike on top of me.  Enjoy!

Have a great President's Day weekend and we'll see you guys on monday!

zombies and demons

Here is a sketch dump for all of you loyal readers.  We were talking about sin and death in my Book of Mormon class this week so I drew some zombies.  I like zombies.  I was going to do a zombie comic in high school but it never happened.  There was a friend of mine who loved writing ideas and stories for comics, but he couldn't do the drawing himself.  He had this plan to hire several artists to illustrate different character's struggle through a zombie infected world.  Ultimately all of the different characters would meet up and make a survival group.  He shared with me the ending of the story and it completely blew my mind.  I was either going to draw the inmate's story or a trumpet player's story.  Unfortunately, the project never got off the ground.  But I would still love to draw a zombie comic!

For whatever reason I always draw gargoyles in my art history class.  Last semester we ended with the Gothic era so it may spring from there.  I like the skinny one perched on the skull.

In my 2D design class we talked about how a few months ago Marvel killed off the Human Torch.  Instead of just rolling with three members of the Fantastic Four they added Spider-man as their fourth member and are called the Future Foundation now.  They all have new suits, click me to see.  At first I wasn't okay with Marvel doing this.  But now I think this is a good thing.  It is about time for some new heroes and new stories.  My only problem is Spider-man still wears his mask.  All of the other members of the Fantastic Four don't have secret identities, so Parker looks out of place with a mask on.  I understand he needs to protect his identity so his family and loved ones are safe. . .but still.

Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Napkin drawings

Happy valentines day everyone!  I don't really buy into valentines day or see the point.  I was in the bookstore today and overheard a conversation between a couple people.  One of the guys had gone to a flower shop and had to pay five times the usual price for flowers.  And plus if valentines day was a real holiday we would get the day off of school.  So instead of celebrating valentines day you can celebrate "tomorrow candy is gonna be really really cheap" day like Natasha Allegri, a character designer on the show Adventure Time.  Or you could celebrate that today was the day the band Weezer was founded.

Anyways, I was planning on drawing up some funny valentine cards for you guys.  But school and life are crazy and it didn't happen.  So instead, here are some napkin drawings that I send through the dishroom to thank the people for doing my dishes.  I guess they saved them because I found him when I worked yesterday.
enjoy your valentines day and don't kiss anyone's face!  It isn't worth it!

and no I will not be wearing my red skinny jeans for valentines day, I will wear them tomorrow.  Oh, and the ask page as been updated with some answers to questions you guys have asked me.  Keep those questions coming!

disappointment

This is the original scan of the college comic.  Click me to see the colored version
There will be no comic for the next few days.  I am trying my hardest to finish up on exams, papers and work.  As soon as I have free time I will post a comic.  I am sorry. . .

Little Bros and Creativity

I know this is hard to read so here is the script:
DAY ONE
S: I’ve been walking all day! It feels like my legs are going to fall off!
S: Wow! Who are you!?!
D: My name is Delta! Who are you?
S: I’m Samu3l! Thanks for saving me!
D: No problem!
S: Want to be on my team?
D: Team?
S: I’m putting together a team to find a ship! But not just any ship—it’s an old fleet transport from the robot wars! You wanna join?
D: Sounds good to me! I’m in! Let’s go find that ship!
3 HOURS LATER
D: I feel like my legs are going to fall off!
S: Oh, I know!
B: Woha! What are you two doing here! Talk or you die!
D: Wow! Don’t shoot! We come in peace! I’m Delta
S: And I’m Samu3l!
B: I’ve heard of you!
S: You have?!
B: Yeah! You’re that off-worlder who is looking for that old transport! You’re on the wrong planet!
S: UGH! REALLY!?! Wait do you know where the ship is?
D: No way!
B: You wanna go here but!. . . we are here!
B: I’ll give you guys a ride. . .my ship is just up the tunnel.  But I ran into some robot trouble. . .
D: What sorta robot trouble?
B: You’ll see
D: Now what?
B: Watch this!
D: Wow!
S: Cool!
B: You guys ready?
S: For what!?!
D: oh boy!
D: RUN! AHHHHHHHHHHHH
S: I see what you mean by robot trouble!
The know the picture quality is pretty bad, but when you realize that these are scans from print-outs of other scans, these aren't that bad.  Over Christmas break my youngest brother, Samuel, really wanted to make a comic with me after reading Jake Parker's Missile Mouse.  If you have been reading the journal comic you'll know I gave my four little brothers Missile Mouse for Christmas.  I really enjoyed making this comic and after a page or two another one of my brothers, Benjamin, wanted in.  The story line is completely made up by Samuel, I just drew the backgrounds and my character.  Hopefully, during my next break we'll finish this story up!  I hope you all enjoyed this as much as we enjoyed making it!

SAMU3L:

DELTA:

UNNAMED CHARACTER:
drawn by Benjamin, we forgot to introduce his name

UPDATE: 'my skinny jeans are red' is only going to run Monday through Saturday now.  We are starting to make money with the page views, so its pretty much a job for me now.  And I don't believe in working on Sunday because of religious reasons.

--Aaron Painter

Another update: Aaron had the idea of doing a week's worth of the comic in color.  It's just an idea right now, but if we get enough positive comments, it will happen!  Also, go check out the Chronicles of Yogurt Boy at yogurtboy.blogspot.com, it's got a few spelling errors, but it is pretty funny, and they've invited Aaron to do some illustration for them, so go see what you think!

A Clever Conversation

Hey there everybody!  I'm Aaron's manager. (that sounds really weird, I think of myself as more of a friend/advocate than a manager)  Aaron is a good friend of mine and a talented artist here at BYU.  He just recently started doing a journal comic and it's pretty funny!  But I'm making him saving up because I know that I am too busy to post for him every day, so we'll have a comic for you all on the 16th.  For now, enjoy this conversation Aaron and I had with Cleverbot today-- it's pretty epic.
